Internet - a revolution in Information and communication Technology
The 21 Century, as they call, is the age of the
information / communication revolution. Rapid
development in the fields of communication and
information technologies over the past 10-15 years has
made a tremendous impact on the socio-economic setup
around the world. Businesses are now operating in a
more dynamic and volatile environment then ever.
Perceptions are changing as people now have easy
access to vast information reservoirs. Territorial and
geographical boundaries are vanishing and the WORLD
is becoming a single global market place. To compete in
this dynamic environment, people need to have access
to the most modern
technologies and introduce modern ways of
communication to gain access to the information hubs.
Internet is thus one of the fastest growing phenomena
in this regard. The Internet is a network of networks,
linking computers to computers. Each runs a software to
provide or "serve" information and/or to access and view information. The Internet is the transport vehicle for the
information stored in files or documents on another
computer.
Computers on the Internet may use one or all of the
following Internet services:
Electronic mail (e-mail). Permits you to send and receive mail.
Telnet or remote login. Permits your computer to log onto another computer and use it as if you were there.
FTP or File Transfer Protocol. Allows your computer to rapidly retrieve complex files intact from a remote computer and view or save them on your computer.
The World Wide Web (WWW or "the Web") is the largest and fastest growing activity on the Internet. The WWW incorporates all of the Internet services above and much more.
The Internet has become more than a complementary
marketing medium. It is becoming the central nerve of
business and commerce. By creating a successful
Internet strategy a business can gain in the following
manner:
Increase customer loyalty
Increase profitability
Reduce your business costs
Reduce customer service cost and response time
Expand business by reaching new customers using targeted and cost-effective methods

Like any other professionals, accountants also need to
keep pace with the technological advancements in order
to deliver their services in an effective and efficient
manner.
